Equipment

  • Deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pan with oil
  • Tongs for flipping and removing frybread
  • Paper towels for draining excess oil

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a round disc about 1/4-inch thick using your hands or a rolling pin.
  • In a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pan, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully place each dough disc into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown and puffed. Use tongs to flip and remove the frybread.
  • Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm with sweet toppings like honey or powdered sugar, or use as a base for savory dishes like Indian Tacos.

Notes

  • Optional Equipment: A thermometer can help maintain oil temperature for even frying.
  • Customization: Add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar for a sweet twist.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven for crispiness.
  • Serving Tip: Top with fresh berries and whipped cream for a dessert-style frybread.
