Equipment

Ingredients
  

  • Arequipe Mixture
  • 2 cans 14 ounces each sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extrac

Instructions
 

  • Combine the Ingredients
  • In a medium-sized pot, add the sweetened condensed milk and sugar. Stir well to combine.
  • Cook the Mixture
  • Place the pot over medium-low heat. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon to prevent the mixture from sticking or burning.
  • Simmer and Thicken
  • Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 60 minutes, stirring frequently. As it cooks, it will thicken and develop a rich golden color.
  • Add Vanilla
  • Once the mixture reaches the desired caramel consistency, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Strain the Arequipe
  • For a smoother texture, pass the mixture through a strainer into a clean bowl or jar.
  • Cool and Store
  • Let the arequipe cool to room temperature before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Stirring constantly is key to avoiding burning or lumps.
  • The caramel will thicken further as it cools.
  • Use arequipe as a spread, filling, or topping for your favorite desserts.
